What Is The Overview Effect?
In the 1960s, astronauts returning from space reported a profound shift in perspective. Seeing the Earth from a distance, without borders or divisions, changed the way they saw themselves and their place in the world.
This is called the Overview Effect. It is a sudden expansion of awareness, a moment of radical presence that dissolves the ego and its petty concerns.
The Overview Effect is not limited to astronauts. It can be accessed through intense, immersive experiences that overwhelm the brain’s usual patterns. Thermal contrast therapy is one of those experiences.
Overloading The Somatosensory Cortex
The somatosensory cortex is the part of the brain that processes sensory information. It handles touch, temperature, pain, and the sense of your body in space.
During a thermal session, this region is flooded with input. The heat of the sauna, the aroma of essential oils, the movement of air from the gusmaster’s towel, and the shock of cold water all compete for the brain’s attention.
This sensory overload has a specific effect. It consumes the brain’s processing capacity to the point where it cannot hold onto thoughts about the past or future. There is no room for regret, worry, or overthinking.
You are forced into the present moment because the present moment is all that your brain can handle.
Breaking The Anxiety Loop
Anxiety is a future-focused state. It projects worst-case scenarios onto a future that has not happened yet. Overthinking is a past-focused state. It replays old mistakes and missed opportunities.
Both are forms of being trapped in time. Both are fueled by the ego, the part of the mind that identifies with stories and identities.
Thermal overload breaks this temporal trap. By flooding the senses with intense, immediate stimuli, the brain is pulled out of time and into the now.
The result is a temporary dissolution of the ego. The stories that usually define you, the worries that usually consume you, they all fall away. You are not your job, your relationships, or your past. You are simply present.
Integrating Radical Presence Into Daily Life
The sense of peace and clarity experienced during a thermal session does not have to stay in the sauna. It can be integrated into daily life.
The first step is awareness. Notice what it feels like to be present. Remember that state, not as a memory, but as a felt experience.
When you encounter a stressful situation in daily life, return to your breath. Slow down. Feel the sensations of your body. This is the same presence you experienced in the session.
Over time, the gap between the sauna and daily life narrows. The presence you found in the extreme conditions becomes something you can access in the ordinary moments.
And when overthinking returns, as it inevitably will, you have a way back. Not by fighting it, but by overwhelming it with presence, the same way the thermal session overwhelmed your senses.
